REAL AUDI Q3: PICTURES AND DETAILS

The cat is finally out the bag as far as the all-new Audi Q3 sub-compact SUV. Tiny Q3 – check the sketches – has made his appearance ahead of Shanghai Auto 2011. The vehicle is only 4.3 metres long, 1.6m tall and stands 17cm off the ground, which means it will battle quite nicely with its fiercest foe, the MINI Countryman.

If you recognise the Q3 it means you know what the Q5 looks like, and you can spot some Q7 in there as well. Audi insists the sloping rear is coupe-like, thus emphasising the car’s youthfulness. Notice how much A1 the interior is; again, youth and lineage. Remember that the Q3 idea is one of an A1-based SUV so common pieces will be sprayed all over the place.

Three engines are being availed when it launches in Germany this June at a price of €29 900 (R293 300). One is a 2.0-litre TFSI, the other a 2.0-litre TDI with two differing outputs. Enty-levelwise is the 103kW 2.0 TDI, followed by the 130kW version and then topped by a 155kW TFSI petrol. Transmissions vary between a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed S Tronic (double-clutch), while drive is either through the two front wheels or all four in the quattro model.

Look forward to exploring the Q3 at the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) in October. Sales will start here in 2012. This time around I think SA and German pricing will be very similar.
