Jaguar could end up at loggerheads with its Land Rover sister, if the latest rumours are true. Word upon the boulevard is that Indian-owned Jaguar is preparing an SUV for launch in the next two years. While the velvety pussy may have pondered upon high-heeled luxury before its days at Ford, the marriage with Landy should have put such thoughts to final rest. Apparently not.
No major details are forthcoming but a Jaguar-badged SUV would obviously share some powertrains with its sedan siblings, which happen to share some technical aspects with the Land Rover cousins over the mud side.
As much as any sensible person can understand the need for Jag to grow as a brand and a business, going after its sister company doesn’t seem very sensible. How about a supercar to take on Lamborghinis? Perhaps a safer route would be to build a smaller XK for instance, to take on the likes of Audi TT and BMW Z4. Better yet, revisit the X-Type and go after the 3 Series. There’s plenty of volume over there. I can’t imagine a Jaguar competing with the 1 Series or producing a B-Class kinda car. But then again, up until 2002, no one believed Porsche would ever build an SUV…
