FRANCE SEES RISE IN CAR SALES

France experienced something of a renaissance in March as automotive sales rose 6.1%, according to industry authority CCFA. This was largely thanks to the scrappage system that was also used in other countries – but not in South Africa – which allowed car buyers to trade in their old vehicles for new ones at vastly reduced prices. It seems the SA auto industry is lagging in this area.

Of the two French industry leaders, it was PSA (Peugeot Citroen) that led the pack with a 13.5% sales rise. Renault enjoyed a sales boost of 12.4%. PSA pushed 220 175 passenger cars between January and March 2011, while Renault (including its Dacia brand) sold 165 149 units.
